Across cultures, literature and performance have long explored the complexities of human emotion. Yet while the emotional experiences of women have often attracted sustained scholarly attention, the inner worlds of male protagonists have received comparatively little focused examination as distinct emotional journeys. Classical Indian aesthetic traditions developed detailed classifications of heroes and heroines, but the emotional interiority of the male protagonist has rarely been studied through a dedicated interpretive lens.

The Speaking God turns to the rich tradition of Telugu Padams and Jāvalis-lyrical compositions celebrated in South Indian music, literature, and dance-to uncover a remarkable archive of masculine voices. In these songs, men desire, persuade, yearn, doubt, transgress, repent, reflect, and transform, revealing emotional landscapes that are both culturally specific and universally human. Far from being one-dimensional heroes, these protagonists emerge as complex individuals negotiating love, longing, vulnerability, devotion, morality, and selfhood.

Drawing upon the works of Annamayya, Kşētrayya, Sarangapāņi, and other celebrated composers, Vamshee Krishna Vunyala proposes a new framework of emotional archetypes for understanding these male protagonists.
