The Gita and the Battle for Selfhood

My formal study of Sanskrit began in 1971 while I was a student at Wesleyan University.

I subsequently studied at the University of Chicago under Professor J. A. B. van Buitenen, the renowned translator of the Bhagavad Gita and the Mahabharata. There, Professor Edwin Gerow also introduced me to Pänini's grammar.

From the very beginning, Päņini's Aşțādhyāyī captivated me so profoundly that I felt compelled to study it in earnest. For this endeavor, I was fortunate to find an extraordinary teacher at Andhra University-J. Prabhakara Sastry. We pursued this study in the traditional guru-śişya manner, entirely through oral instruction.

Although I later entered the field of medicine and practiced psychiatry, my passion for learning and sharing Pāņini's grammar has never waned.
