Jatarupa's commentary is the oldest extant commentary on the Amarakosa. Author's involvement with the present work began in 1976, when he discovered one of the two extant manuscripts of Jatarupa's commentary on the Amarakosa. The actual work of editing the text did not get under way, until 1979, when the Nepal-German Manuscript Preservation Project (NGMPP) provided the author with the facilities and opportunity to engage in such work. In early stages, author did not do much beyond transcribing the text and emending obvious clerical errors in the manuscript. It was only in 1987 that author sat down to the task in earnest--that took him almost four years to complete. The present work is a revised version of the latter. Jatarupa's commentary is an important piece of Indian lexicographical literature because it is the oldest available commentarial literature on classical lexicography in general.
