What if, beneath the celebrated achievement of Pāņini, lies an older and largely forgotten science of language?

Aindra-Vyākaraņa explores the lost grammatical tradition attributed to Indra and asks whether its principles can still be reconstructed from the fragments, references, and surviving traditions that preserve its memory. Beginning with the remarkable account in the Taittirīya Samhita of Indra differentiating avyākṛtā vāk [undifferentiated speech], the book interprets vyäkaraņa as an act of fundamental differentiation: the transformation of linguistic potential into structured, meaningful expression. This principle is examined through the framework of prakrti-pratyaya-vibhāga, where words are analysed into their constituent elements and systematically generated. The investigation brings together Vedic texts, the Nirukta, Patañjali, Bhartṛhari, and later grammatical traditions, alongside comparative evidence from the Prātiśākhyas, Kātantra, Kaccayana's Pāli grammar, and the Tamil Tolkäppiyam. This evidence is used to examine the possibility that Aindra principles survived across linguistic traditions even after the original system was lost.

The book then takes an unusual step. It translates the reconstructed prakṛti-pratyaya framework into a formal mathematical and computational language model, exploring derivational structure, sandhi, compositional semantics, and stochastic modelling. Ultimately, the book proposes that Aindra-Vyākaraņa was not merely an ancient grammar, but an early theory of language as a generative and formal system and possibly the first systematic language model of Sanskrit, and perhaps the earliest formal language model conceived for human language.

This is a journey into a lost intellectual tradition, guided by a single enduring idea:

Vāg Vyākṛtā-speech differentiated.
